State police said that at about 12:15 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 29, troopers from Troop G- Bridgeport were completing a motor vehicle stop on Route 8 southbound near exit 7 when a Volkswagen Passat drove past the stationary state police cruisers (with emergency lights activated) in the right lane nearly sideswiping a cruiser.
Troopers stopped the Volkswagen for failing to obey the Move Over Law, and upon speaking with the operator they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from inside the Volkswagen.
Troopers initiated an investigation and the passenger, Jonathan Ven, admitted to having a small amount of marijuana which he handed over to troopers.
Upon searching Ven's vehicle, troopers said they located and seized more than eight pounds (over 3.6 kilos) of marijuana.
Ven claimed sole ownership of the marijuana and explained that he had it mailed to himself so that he could sell it.
Ven of Naugatuck was taken into custody and transported to Troop G-Bridgeport where he was charged with possession of one or more kilograms of cannabis and possession of a controlled substance.
He was held on $100,000 bond and scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court later on Monday.
The operator of the Volkswagen was issued an infraction ticket for violating the #MoveOverCT law.
